  • A mural at the train station in Aralsk depicting the events during the 1921 famine when Vladimir Lenin wrote a letter asking for assistance from the fishermen. They sent 14 rail wagons of fish to the famine-ravaged regions. Once the fourth-largest freshwater lake in the world, by the 1990s the Aral Sea was a barren, shrunken ruin due to disastrous Soviet irrigation policies.
